Istanbul Market

As part of a architecture competition event, this was a design for a market place in central Istanbul, Turkey. A key focus of the design was to integrate a culturally relevant modern context into the design aesthetic. Entrance from the street is via a colonnaded veranda that also houses the Tea House. A central vertical circulation (stair/lift) zone
connects the stalls to the galleries and workrooms overhead, a latticed ceiling space features in the double volume market hall, while providing shade and a space for market operations, social interaction and activated street frontages with spaces for cafes and al fresco seating. By Thom Craig.
